Dear A2

It is not your fault. It is not your fault. It is not your fault.

It is not your fault that your mom was an addict, and didn’t take care of you and your brothers.

It is not your fault that your dad was an abuser.

It is not your fault that your mom did not protect you from all the abuse you endured.

It is not your fault that your grandma enabled you uncle to hurt you.

It is not your fault your uncle hurt you.

It is not your fault you were put into foster care.

It is not your fault that your brothers are hurting.

Sweetheart I know how hard it is to have your life spinning out of control. In a way, it’s easier to blame yourself, because it means that you have something concrete to hold on to. But darling, it is never the fault of the child when the adults make bad choices. It is never the fault of the child when the adults abuse and hurt and neglect.

You were born into a family of hurting, broken people who lash out in a lot of different ways, but their choices have always been their own.

I know it’s especially hard to believe that it isn’t your fault when you have been told so often that it is. I know that the adults who hurt you blamed you for their actions. But you have never been a bad kid, and even if you were, it still wouldn’t excuse the monstrous things that were done to you. No one deserves that.

I am so sorry that you were not taken care of and loved and protected the way you deserved to be. And you did deserve love and care, you always have. You are so precious and worthy and lovable, dear one. My heart breaks that you can’t see that, and I can only pray that one day you’ll be able to.
